# Design in Virtual Reality

> What is VR? Virtual Reality is a technology that allows users to immerse themselves in an entirely virtual world. A VR headset allows full 360-degree viewing around the user to explore, interact with space and meet friends/colleagues for collaboration. What is AR? Augmented Real…

## About this course

Design in Virtual Reality is a course on PAACADEMY that teaches 3D modeling directly within a VR environment using Gravity Sketch. Participants create free-form and constrained 3D geometries in VR, export models via Gravity Sketch's Landing Pad, optimize and UV map them in Blender, and then build interactive AR experiences with procedural animations in Spark AR Studio for upload to Instagram. A VR headset is recommended but participants can also follow in 2D.

## What you'll learn

- 3D Modeling in VR: Gain hands-on experience with Gravity Sketch to create and manipulate 3D models directly in a virtual reality environment.

- Free-Form Sketching Techniques: Explore various methods for free-form sketching and constrained geometry blocking within a VR space.

- Model Exporting: Learn how to export your VR models using Gravity Sketch’s Landing Pad for further refinement.

- Geometry Optimization in Blender: Understand how to UV map and optimize your 3D models in Blender before transferring them to SparkAR.

- Interactive Experiences in SparkAR: Develop your project in SparkAR by adding animations and interactions, culminating in a personal upload to Instagram.

## Methodology

We’ll dive into 3d modeling and creation directly within a Virtual Reality setting via Gravity Sketch, an intuitive 3D design platform for cross-disciplinary teams to create, collaborate, and review in VR. You can create in the space around you at any scale, from concept sketches to detailed 3D models. Using the intuitive gestural toolset, we will explore and create several 3D forms in a Pavilion project and demonstrate the speed and accuracy of ideation in the tool. Viewing models outside of VR is possible with Gravity Sketch’s Landing Pad, a web-based platform that allows you to spin and export.

Once exported, we’ll take a 3D sketch into Blender to UV map, optimize the geometry, and then into SparkAR Studio. In SparkAR, we’ll continue to develop the project by adding interactions and procedural animations. Once complete, we’ll upload it to your personal Instagram account. Attendees with VR headsets will have chances to enter the VR space together during the final and mid-reviews (3 at a time). If you do not have a VR headset, you can join and view in 2D. The first workshop and reviews will occur simultaneously in VR and be displayed in 2D for viewing.

## FAQ

### What is Gravity Sketch used for in this VR design course?
Gravity Sketch is the primary design tool in this course, used to create and manipulate 3D models directly in a virtual reality environment. Participants learn to use its gestural toolset including Ink, Stroke, Revolve, Surface, Volume, Primitives, and SubD to create free-form sketches, trace over imported models, and block out constrained geometry. Models are exported through Gravity Sketch's Landing Pad for further development.

### What does the Design in Virtual Reality course cover?
The course covers VR modeling in Gravity Sketch, model export via Landing Pad, UV mapping and geometry optimization in Blender, and Spark AR Studio development including procedural animations and interactive AR experience creation. The final output is uploaded to participants' personal Instagram accounts as a completed AR project.

### Do I need a VR headset to take this course?
A VR headset is recommended to fully participate in the VR modeling sessions. Participants without a headset can join and follow along in 2D, as workshops and reviews are displayed simultaneously in VR and in 2D view. VR headset owners will also have opportunities to enter shared VR spaces during reviews.

### What will I produce by the end of this course?
Participants complete a full pipeline from VR-modeled 3D form through Blender optimization to a published Spark AR experience with animations and interactions, uploaded to their personal Instagram account. The project demonstrates the complete workflow from immersive 3D sketching to interactive augmented reality.
