## About this course

Transform your concepts into fabrication-ready geometry in Monolithic Furniture, an intermediate 2-day Houdini workshop. Balance ergonomics and structural constraints to prepare your custom designs for continuous robotic toolpathing—enroll now!

## What you'll learn

- How to analyse and rebuild a chair as a procedural model in Houdini.
- How to build computational design workflows for complex furniture design.
- How to shape geometry around structural and ergonomic requirements.
- How to design surface patterns and adaptive transitions that stay self-supporting.
- How to account for overhangs, wall thickness and print orientation.
- How to adapt furniture geometry to large-format additive manufacturing.
- How to evaluate geometry for continuous robotic printing and toolpath logic.
- How to develop a fabrication-ready digital furniture proposal for toolpath generation and production.

## Methodology

Participants will design a chair specifically optimized for large-scale additive manufacturing. The process examines how computational geometry, structural logic, and ergonomics must be directly integrated with real-world fabrication constraints.

The project progresses systematically through case study analysis, computational modeling, geometric refinement, and fabrication assessment. Crucially, your design strategy will be driven by the physical realities of 3D printing: overhang angles, wall thickness, layer height, print orientation, material behavior, self-supporting geometry, and continuous toolpath logic.

### Scope

Throughout the workshop, students will focus on integrating design with production parameters. You will:

- Analyze and rebuild a chair using procedural workflows in Houdini.
- Develop complex geometry that satisfies both ergonomic and structural requirements.
- Integrate strict production constraints, including overhang limits and print orientation.
- Prepare self-supporting geometry for large-scale additive manufacturing and robotic 3D printing.
- Develop and present an individual, fabrication-ready furniture proposal.

### Program

**Day 1: Case Study & Computational Furniture Design**

- **Introduction to Large-Scale AM:** Review reference projects and explore the transition from design to physical production.
- **Houdini Workflows:** Showcase and analyze established procedural setups.
- **Procedural Rebuilding:** Follow a guided rebuild of a chair. Every participant will finish Day 1 with a working procedural setup.
- **Design Ideation:** Develop individual geometry variations governed by ergonomic constraints and production limits.
**Day 2: Fabrication, Design Optimization & Final Proposal**

- **Geometric Refinement:** Enhance your furniture geometry using surface patterns and adaptive transitions.
- **Production Optimization:** Adjust and optimize designs based on overhangs, wall thickness, and print orientation.
- **Robotic Toolpathing:** Prepare geometry for continuous robotic toolpath generation (including slicing and G-code output demonstrations, time permitting).
- **Final Review:** Develop, present, and review your individual fabrication-ready furniture proposal.

## FAQ

### What level of experience is required to participate?
Basic experience with 3D modeling and computational design is recommended. Familiarity with Rhino and Grasshopper will help participants follow the workflow effectively.

### How does large-scale 3D printing influence the design process?
The fabrication method directly informs the geometry. Participants will consider overhangs, wall thickness, layer height, print orientation, and material behavior throughout the design process.

### Will the workshop cover the development of a complete furniture model?
Yes. Participants will recreate the reference chair and progressively develop their own variation using the computational and fabrication principles introduced during the workshop.

### How is computational design applied specifically to furniture fabrication?
The workshop focuses on using parametric workflows to control continuous geometry, structural performance, ergonomics, and fabrication constraints within a single design system.

### What will participants be able to produce by the end of the workshop?
Participants will develop a fabrication-oriented digital furniture proposal with geometry suitable for further slicing, robotic toolpath development, and large-scale additive manufacturing.
