What does the Bifocals plugin do in Grasshopper?

Bifocals is a Grasshopper plugin that adds readable labels and parameter names directly to components on the canvas, making complex parametric definitions much easier to follow. It is particularly useful in learning environments and when reviewing or modifying existing scripts, as it removes the need to inspect each node individually to understand what the definition is doing.

What will I learn in PAACADEMY's Beyond Geometry course?

Beyond Geometry at PAACADEMY teaches three areas: the relationship between geometry and architecture explored through parametric modeling; the core principles and logic of parametric design using Grasshopper; and hands-on scripting, including writing and modifying scripts from scratch. The course runs for 8 hours across 6 lessons and is classified as beginner level, taught by Bryan Garcia Agudelo.

Is the Bifocals course at PAACADEMY suitable for designers with no Grasshopper experience?

Yes. Beyond Geometry is designed for beginners with no prior Grasshopper or parametric scripting experience. It teaches parametric design from foundational principles, covering both conceptual understanding and practical scripting skills. This makes it accessible to architecture students and designers who are new to computational design tools entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bifocals

Bifocals is a Grasshopper plugin that automatically displays parameter names and values as labels directly on Grasshopper components within the canvas, making scripts easier to read, document and share with others. In practice, it addresses one of the common challenges of working with Grasshopper scripts: large parametric definitions become difficult to navigate and share because the nodes themselves do not show their input and output names in the default view. Bifocals solves this by making the data structure of a Grasshopper script visually legible without requiring the reader to hover over individual components.
