What is parametric architecture?

Parametric architecture uses computational tools to generate building form through adjustable rules and relationships rather than fixed drawings. Designers set parameters such as structural load, solar exposure or facade density, and the geometry updates automatically in response. Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper 3D are the most widely used tools for parametric architectural design in professional practice.

How do I start learning computational design for architecture?

Start with Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper 3D. PAACADEMY's Computational Mindset: Foundations for Innovation in Design and Computational Thinking courses are built for architects with no prior computational experience. They cover core parametric logic, data structures and the tools used in professional offices before moving into advanced applications like environmental analysis, fabrication workflows and generative urbanism.

What is the difference between parametric design and generative design in architecture?

Parametric design uses defined rules and input variables to control geometry, keeping the designer in direct control of outcomes. Generative design uses algorithms to automatically explore a wider solution space, often producing unexpected results. PAACADEMY covers both: Grasshopper-based parametric courses teach controlled form-making, while courses like AI City Urban Design in Grasshopper and ComfyUI combine parametric logic with AI-driven generation.
