Monoceros is a Grasshopper plugin implementing the Wave Function Collapse (WFC) algorithm for procedural modular design. WFC is a constraint-based generation algorithm originally developed for texture synthesis that has been adapted for 3D modular spatial design: given a set of modules with defined connector rules, WFC generates spatially coherent assemblies that satisfy all the connector constraints simultaneously without overlaps or dead ends.
At PAACADEMY, Monoceros is a central tool in BIM and Rhino.Inside for Advanced Modular Design by Albert Sumin. It tackles the complex logic of prefabricated architecture:
- Rule-Based Aggregation: Defining strict connection rules for architectural modules (e.g., stairs must connect to slabs).
- Procedural Assembly: Automatically generating thousands of valid modular building configurations in seconds.
- BIM Integration: Coupling WFC generated structures directly with Revit using Rhino.Inside to produce immediate BIM documentation.
