Welcome to Conversational Parametric Design: ChatGPT-6 Astra × Rhino, a 2-day live workshop on PAACADEMY where you’ll learn to use AI to build, modify, and debug parametric models in Rhino and Grasshopper through natural-language prompts. Led by Leo Bieling, Principal at blng studio and former researcher at ZHACODE, the workshop takes you from design intent to working Grasshopper scripts, covering geometry generation, parametric control, iteration, and workflow automation. You’ll leave with practical scripts and a reusable AI-assisted workflow for your own projects.

  • 01

Read a building or pattern as a system of rules, and tell a reference with real parametric potential from one that only looks complex

  • 02

Interrogate an image with ChatGPT-6 Astra so that it returns usable geometric logic instead of generic description

  • 03

Write pseudo-code for a design: naming the parameters that matter, setting their ranges, and deciding what stays fixed

  • 04

Turn that logic into a working parametric script for Rhino 8 without writing code yourself

  • 05

Run a script in Rhino and drive the geometry through a slider interface

  • 06

Diagnose broken or wrong output and correct it through conversation rather than starting over

  • 07

Take viewport captures into Runway to produce styled renders and short animations from your own geometry

Get ready for an immersive, studio-style workshop where theory immediately becomes practice. Bring your own architectural reference to deconstruct or work with curated studio precedents as you explore a hands-on, real-world design workflow with industry expertise.

By the end of the course, you will master a reliable, rule-based pipeline to turn spatial ideas into editable 3D geometry. Across two hands-on sessions, you will learn how to:

  • Deconstruct Geometric Rules: Read architectural precedents as parametric systems, isolating fixed constants, variations, and constraints before writing any text.
  • Author Clean Pseudo-Code: Structure your design logic into plain language, defining parameters, value ranges, and design rules.
  • Drive Live Rhino Geometry: Direct ChatGPT-6 Astra to build working scripts inside Rhino 8 and control your models dynamically using live slider interfaces.
  • Iterate and Debug Through Dialogue: Diagnose misbehaving geometry and refine your parametric output through targeted conversation rather than starting over.
  • Produce Cinematic Motion: Export viewport captures into Runway to generate styled renders and fluid animated video sequences.

AI models will continue to evolve, but the logic behind computational design remains transferable. This workshop teaches you how to read geometry, structure design intent, and direct AI to build reliable parametric workflows. While ChatGPT-6 Astra is used throughout the workshop, the methodology can be adapted to future generations of AI models.

Program

Day 1: Logic Extraction, Pseudo-Code & Live Scripting:

Begin with an architectural precedent and uncover what makes its geometry work. Through image analysis and discussion with ChatGPT-6 Astra, turn visual patterns into a clear set of rules, relationships, and parameters. These ideas then become pseudo-code and, ultimately, a live parametric system inside Rhino 8. The rest of the day is about making that system respond: pushing sliders, exploring unexpected variations, and using conversation to troubleshoot and reshape the geometry as it develops.

Day 2: Advanced Precedents, AI Renders & Motion:

Take the same approach into more ambitious architectural examples, where multiple rules and parameters interact to create richer forms. Once the geometry is working, shift from making to presenting, developing camera views in Rhino and transforming your models into styled imagery and animated sequences with Runway. The workshop concludes by bringing everything together into a reusable library of prompts, pseudo-code, and working scripts that you can carry into your next project.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is designed for architects, spatial designers, and students who want to explore computational design without the steep learning curve of traditional coding or complex Grasshopper workflows. No prior scripting, Grasshopper, or advanced AI experience is required; basic confidence navigating Rhino is enough. Experienced computational designers are also welcome to explore a conversational approach to developing and testing design logic.

What you should already know or have ready before you start, experience, tools, and any baseline skills the instructors expect. Scan the list below so nothing catches you off guard.

  • ChatGPT: A paid subscription (Plus or Pro) is required to access the ChatGPT-6 Astra model. While the underlying methodology is model-agnostic and transferable to other frontier LLMs like Claude or Gemini, the specific workflows taught in this workshop are fine-tuned for Astra.
  • Rhino 8: Windows or Mac. No plug-ins or Grasshopper background required. A free 90-day evaluation license from McNeel is completely sufficient if you do not already own Rhino 8. Basic proficiency in Rhino is required.
  • Runway: A Standard plan (625 credits per month) or higher is recommended so you can freely iterate on styled renders and animated sequences.

A Strong Foundation for AutoTroph Computational Thinking

This course was especially valuable for my AutoTroph research because it develops the kind of computational thinking needed to work with adaptive architectural systems. The progression from mathematical surfaces and data structures to recursive algorithms, meshes, and volumetric modeling shows how design can emerge from rules, relationships, and feedback. Rather than treating Grasshopper as a form-making tool, the workshop encourages participants to design the process itself, which closely aligns with my interest in architectures that can respond, transform, and evolve.

Excellent Course for Architectural Competitions

A very useful and well-structured course that clearly explains how to use AI throughout the architectural competition process, from understanding and rethinking the brief to concept development, visualization, presentation boards, and final submission. I learned practical methods that can improve creativity, workflow, storytelling, and the overall quality of competition projects.

This course introduced me to the fundamentals of how data can be effectively utilized and exchanged between software systems. Despite having very limited coding knowledge, I realized that the barrier to entry has become significantly lower, enabling anyone to explore “vibe coding” and create innovative solutions without requiring extensive technical expertise.

A great introduction to AI-driven architectural modelin

A very insightful workshop exploring how AI agents can interact with Rhino and Revit to create and modify geometry, work with BIM data, and automate repetitive tasks. It offered a practical perspective on how AI can become part of the architectural workflow beyond image generation and visualization.
