3D-Printing Ceramics 2.0 workshop teaches clay 3D printing techniques, file setup, and custom print paths through hands-on exercises.
To bridge the gap between the realms of digital and physical, 3D printing with clay has gained immense popularity over the last few years. The process adds another layer of intrigue to fabrication, where material and print paths must be finely tuned to achieve spectacular results. It is a compelling and exciting creation method, with techniques applicable from object to architectural scales.
To gain skills for 3D printing with clay, you will not be required to have a clay 3D printer, but you will follow along with a series of 10 exercises that will gradually build up your knowledge from setting up a print in cura, creating G-code in Grasshopper, and customizing print-paths to develop completely bespoke pieces. After each exercise, we will print a student’s work to assess how the digital file translates into clay. These prints will be live-streamed from a separate camera to see how they build up layer by layer. Thus, we will learn from failures and find exciting new languages for design.
In the 3D-Printing Ceramics 2.0 workshop, we will explore clay 3D printing, with an introduction to the material and fabrication process, setting up files to print with cura, and finely choreographing printing paths with Grasshopper to gain complete control over the printer, learning techniques such as non-planar printing, variable extrusion, and custom-print paths. Alongside practical lessons, we will explore different clay 3D printer specifications and ways of post-processing pieces after they have been printed to capitalize on the infinite possibilities of clay and ceramics.
