The workshop aims to provide participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills designing efficient geometries while leveraging data and visualization techniques to gain insights into the performance of their designs. Participants will learn the fundamentals of parametric design, structural analysis, and optimization techniques, enabling them to create structure-aware and visually appealing architectural and engineering designs.

Parametric Design Principles: Understand the fundamentals of parametric design and structural efficiency in architecture and engineering.
Grasshopper Plugins: Gain proficiency in using Karamba3D for structural analysis and optimization, and Speckle for data transfer and automation.
Efficient Geometries: Explore parametric modeling strategies to create structurally efficient designs.
Data Visualization Techniques: Learn to integrate real-time data visualization to communicate structural performance and design insights.
Hands-On Experience: Apply concepts through practical exercises, design critiques, and collaborative discussions.

Introduction to parametric design and structural design principles in architectural and engineering projects.Overview of the Grasshopper 3D plugins Karamba3D, EleFront and Speckle for structural analysis, data transfer and embedding.Parametric modeling strategies for generating structurally efficient geometries.Integrating real time data visualization techniques into the design process to communicate structural performance and design analytics. The workshop will be conducted as a combination of presentations, tutorials, and hands-on exercises. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the concepts learned through practical design exercises. Participants will also have opportunities for Q&A sessions, discussions, and design critiques to enhance their understanding and receive feedback.

Introduce participants to the principles of parametric design, structural efficiency, and data visualization for architectural and engineering projects.Familiarize participants with Karamba3D and its capabilities for structural analysis, optimization, and performance-driven design.Familiarize participants with Speckle and its capabilities for platform interoperability, automation and version control.Develop participants skills in Rhino/Grasshopper 3D to analyze, optimize, and visualize parametric designs.Demonstrate real-world case studies and examples that showcase the integration of parametric design, structural efficiency, and data visualization.Experiment, research and document through iterative hands-on exercises.Incentivise collaboration and knowledge transfer among participants through conversations and design feedback.

  • Basic knowledge of Rhino & Grasshopper is highly required. you may check PAACADEMY’s Essential Courses Pack.
  • General knowledge of Karamba 3D is recommended.

Biography
Federico Borello is a registered Architect (OAT and ARB), currently based in London. He has a master’s degree with Honors from the Polytechnic of Turin and an MArch degree from the Architectural Association Design Research Laboratory (DRL) in London. He has been a Visiting Scholar at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (NY) and has participated in multiple international workshops, including AA Visiting School in Rome and London. He is the co-founder and Director of ENCODE – Design & Technology, a consultancy practice for Architects, Engineers, Manufacturers, and Contractors to develop and deliver innovative projects from early design stages to construction, leveraging state-of-the-art virtual construction technologies and DfMA processes. Federico worked for over four years in London as a Senior Architect at Zaha Hadid Architects in the CODE group (Computation and Design), with a core focus on digital fabrication and structure-aware geometries, robotic-assisted manufacturing, and 3d printing. He also worked in Italy with Cesare Griffa Architects, Camerana & Partners, and Gufram. Federico is also a Lecturer at UCL Bartlett BPro in London, where he co-leads the Research Cluster 10 in Architectural Design. He has taught numerous courses and conferences including AADRL (London), Bartlett BPro (London), Tonji University (Shanghai), CITA (Copenhagen), ACADIA (Austin).
