3D printing technology has revolutionized design and fabrication, offering a shortcut to turning digital designs into physical objects. This workshop aims to empower you with the skills to push the boundaries of this technology, enabling you to create innovative and unique designs.

Throughout this workshop, you’ll quickly learn the basics of 3D printing, including different materials and essential parameters, followed by extensive manipulation of these parameters. We’ll go beyond the default settings of slicing software by generating custom G-Codes with Grasshopper. You’ll be able to experiment with and optimize the printing process to suit your creative needs.

  • By the end of the workshop, you will be confident in 3D printing, ready to tackle any design challenge that comes your way. To achieve your desired results, you will learn fundamental 3D printing concepts and explore parameter adjustments in slicing software like Cura.
  • You’ll gain practical experience designing small-scale interior objects and generating custom toolpaths and G-codes for maximal control and professionalism.

The workshop will combine presentations, tutorials, and hands-on exercises with live – printing sessions. Participants will apply the concepts learned through practical design exercises, focusing on small-scale interior design objects (up to 10 cm / 4 inches) to ensure feasible printing times.A typical workflow will involve generating a base geometry, creating a custom toolpath for the object, and defining parameters for the 3D printing process in Rhino and Grasshopper.

Program:

  • Introduction
  • Basic Principles of 3D Printing
  • Worksession 1: Exploring 3D Printing Parameters and Pushing Their Limits
  • Worksession 2: Generating Custom Toolpaths and G-Codes
  • Q&A

  • Review of First Printing Experiments
  • Worksession 3: Non-Planar and Mid-Air Printing
  • Worksession 4: Experiments with Flexible Materials and Printing on Fabric
  • Q&A

  • Grasshopper 3D
  • Rhinoceros 3D
  • Cura

This workshop is suitable for everyone, from 3D printing newbies to enthusiasts looking to deepen their knowledge. The introductory session on 3D printing will ensure all participants start on the same level before diving into the more advanced sessions.

Access to an FDM 3D printer is not required, but it is highly appreciated.

If you plan to print during the workshop, here is a list of materials we will be using in addition to your 3D printer:

Worksession 1-3:

  • PLA (personal preference: matte and colorful)
  • Printing nozzles: 0.4mm as default and 0.8mm for experimentation (the larger, the better)

Worksession 4:

  • Flexible TPU
  • 1m² of stretchy coarse-meshed fabric (e.g. mixture of Polyamide and Polyester)

Get ready to print, experiment, and have some fun with 3D printing!
